  • Aminophylline or theophylline is used to relieve cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and troubled breathing. The medication works by opening up the air passages of the lungs and increasing the amount of air flowing into the lungs.

  • Amitraz is used to treat mange in dogs. Your veterinarian will need to scrape a small area of your pet's skin to make a diagnosis of mange and also to monitor treatment.

  • Amitriptyline has been prescribed to treat separation anxiety in your dog or to treat excessive grooming, urine spraying and anxiety in cats. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant.

  • Anabolic steroids stimulate appetite, increase muscle mass, increase skin thickness, and increase production of red blood cells. They are used as an additional treatment in chronic kidney problems, and in animals that are convalescing or debilitated.

  • Anaemia describes a reduction in the amount of red blood cells in the circulation and is a relatively common problem in cats.

  • This tumour is a disordered and purposeless overgrowth of cells originating from the modified sweat glands of an anal sac.

  • Analgesics or "pain-killers" include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioid analgesics. They are used to control pain such as in arthritis or following surgical operations.

  • Unfortunately anthrax has been used as a method of bio-terrorism and cats can be infected, as can most mammals.

  • Different medicines may be prescribed to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestine. They work in various ways to allow the ulcer to heal.

  • Antibiotics (or antibacterials) are used to treat bacterial infections. Different antibiotics are used to treat different infections.
